PS5 Pro HDMI repair: rebuilding ripped vias and traces

This PS5 Pro came in from another repair shop after an attempted HDMI repair. The HDMI area had suffered significant PCB damage, with several pads and traces ripped from the board.

The problem

Most of the damaged connections were reasonably straightforward to repair by exposing the remaining trace and rebuilding the connection to the new HDMI port.

Two connections were considerably more difficult: HDMI pins 15 and 19.

Normally, if an HDMI pad has been ripped from the PCB, there is still a section of trace leading away from the missing pad. I can expose some of that copper and run a very small jumper wire between the trace and the matching HDMI connector pin.

That was not possible with these two connections. The traces for pins 15 and 19 terminated at vias located essentially within the HDMI pads themselves. When the original pads were ripped away, the vias went with them. There was no obvious surface trace left to solder to.

Finding the remains of the vias

Under the microscope I could just make out tiny points where the vias had previously passed into the PCB. There was not really anything usable to solder to, so I very carefully ground away a small amount of PCB material around those locations.

The aim was to remove just enough material to expose whatever copper remained from the buried connection without damaging the surrounding layers. Eventually, extremely small areas of copper started to appear.

Because the exposed points were so small, I could not simply assume I had found the correct connection. I checked them in diode mode and obtained sensible forward-voltage readings over 1 V, giving me confidence that I had reached the intended signal lines.

After carefully removing board material, I was able to expose the tiny remaining data connection and nearby ground inside the damaged pad area.

Rebuilding the connection

Once enough copper was exposed to work with, I soldered an extremely fine strand of copper wire to the remaining connection. The other end could then be connected to the appropriate HDMI pin, replacing the missing section of pad, via and trace.

I repeated the same process for the second destroyed via. Several other ripped traces around the HDMI connector were also repaired, but those had accessible remaining trace sections and could be reconstructed with more conventional jumper repairs.

Testing

After rebuilding the damaged connections and installing the HDMI port, I reassembled the console enough to test it.

The PS5 Pro produced an HDMI signal again.

Result

This repair was considerably more involved than a normal HDMI port replacement. A missing HDMI pad is generally repairable if enough of its trace remains accessible. In this case, removing the pads had also removed the vias connecting those pads into the PCB.

Recovering the connections required carefully working into the damaged PCB, identifying the tiny remains of the buried copper electrically, and attaching jumper wires directly to those points.

It was not particularly pretty under magnification, but electrically the connections were restored and the console's HDMI output was recovered.
